The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) organized a public hearing: Implementation and monitoring of the UN Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities by the EU institutions and the role of the EESC.

The conference will be held on Tuesday 16 October 2012 from 9.00 am to 1.00 pm in the VMA building, Rue van Maerlant 2, in Brussels.


The public hearing aims to provide a deeper understanding of the Convention while looking at the implications of its implementation at EU level, as well as providing an opportunity for stakeholders to exchange views and discuss the opinion.

Speakers at the conference include Stig Langvad, member of the United Nations Committee on the rights of persons with disabilities, Aurel Ciobanu-Dordea, Director of the Equality Directorate at DG Justice, European Commission, Xavier Verboven, president of the EESC Study Group on the "UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities" and the President of the European Disability Forum, Ioannis Vardakastanis, as well as a variety of EU-bodies and other stakeholders.

Participants are kindly requested to register as soon as possible and not later than 9 October.
